YOU WANTED A PURE HEART. I BROUGHT YOU A REAL ONE.
In this work, sacred iconography is removed from its traditional religious distance and brought into an emotional, physical, and contemporary dimension. The Madonna does not appear mystical or untouchable; her gaze is human, direct, and almost fragile. At the center of her chest appears an anatomical heart, replacing the symbolic heart traditionally associated with Christian imagery. Love is no longer idealized or spiritualized: the heart returns to being a living organ—vulnerable, real, and exposed.
Also exhibited at MUSME as part of the exhibition Storie di cuore e di Coraggio, the work creates a dialogue between anatomy, spirituality, and pop culture, transforming a universally recognizable image into a reflection on the contemporary need to constantly display one’s inner self.
The bright yellow background eliminates all narrative depth and makes the figure immediately legible, almost visually consumable. Yet beneath this apparent simplicity remains a constant tension between the sacred and advertising, devotion and image, intimacy and exposure.
Here too, pop language does not trivialize the subject. Instead, it makes it immediate, forcing the viewer to confront what they would normally prefer to observe only superficially.
